Lilith

Not many people know this, but before Eve, there was Lilith, who didn’t conform to be subordinate to Adam. Lilith has been outcast and often banished from modern religious texts because of her fiery nature and her refusal to comply with the status quo. Eve, on the other hand, was created by God from his rib to know her place as subordinate to Adam. When I look at Bible stories, fairy tales, folklore, and myths, I see these narratives as metaphors for life.

There comes a time in all of our lives when we’re asked to go against the grain, to question and reject societal norms and the ways of our peers. This full moon during spring equinox brings with it a very different energy. As many of you will know, I am definitely one keen to encourage everyone to get in touch with their more tender, compassionate aspects of themselves. The meaning of yoga is union, union of all aspects of ourselves in order to live a life of wholeness and meaning. Recognizing the importance of balance in our practice, I equally encourage people to harness their fiery energy in a healthy and productive way, as when we don’t, these more shadowy hidden aspects of self can come out in more destructive ways.

The full moon clearly reminds us of our capacity to be wild, aggressive, passionate, and ruthless when necessary. To debunk a common misconception, this energy does not only apply to women. Men also experience the moon’s compelling energy. It’s just often fortunate that for most men, but not all, they have an outlet for this fiery energy as well as it being much more socially acceptable for men to express these traits. For some of us, however, far too much time is spent playing the good girl or the nice guy, and we don’t make space for these shadowy aspects, and so hence the occasional unexpected and often disproportionate outbursts of emotion.

It is true some full moon energies do require us to engage in an act of letting go, but sometimes the full moon requires action. It isn’t a time for dreaming into the future; it’s a time for embodying the present moment wholeheartedly and honestly. This particular full moon around the spring equinox is demanding some kind of rebirth. An ultimate surrender of a version of self that came before and a commitment to taking action towards the unknown path.

With this, I put to you these questions for reflection. Feel free to journal with these questions, use your oracle deck to seek guidance, dedicate a yoga practice to or use as an affirmation for your meditation.

I also remind you that love is often the answer to all major questions in life so don’t forget this when working with the questions below as they may trigger deep wounds that need your love and compassionate to nurture towards healing.

1. Where do you recognize the need to access your more Lilith qualities?

2. How have you denied your ability to be ruthless, assertive, or aggressive in service to what you believe, in order to not offend or hurt another person? And what was the outcome of this?

3. When have you employed Lilith qualities in a situation in service to personal growth?

4. When have your Lilith qualities surprised you and taken over unexpectedly? What was the outcome?

5. This full moon, what actions can you take towards integrating your Lilith qualities in service to your soul’s journey?
